Summer

Hola! It's been great fun birding this summer in Larimer county. Right now I'm at about 215 bird species and I'm still going on to find some more birds. I hope you are all cheering on my friend Skyler Bol on his blog. Happy Summer. PS my actual name is Christian. Sincerely, Christian

Golfing suprise

Today I was down in Loveland playing golf when I saw a couple gulls fly toward lake Loveland. I told myself that I had to go find those birds. I put my clubs in the car went driving. Sure enough I spent 30 minutes there until I spotted and identified all the gulls when I stopped on a couple. Right then I said, we got a California gull. Suprised by my luck in the past week and days, I decided to make a drive down to Walden ponds where there were reportings of horned grebes. I drove up and there they were. 2 horned grebes. This week has brought in some new birds for me. I hope it can last longer. Sincerely, Omeganook

Thompson river

Today I went down to the Thompson river and found a steller's Jay in a tree and a greater SCAUP on the river. Right when we were leaving I looked up and identified a eastern pheobe. The eastern pheobe was also seen by another birder the same day. Please go and check out my friend Skyler Bol's blog at 2012juniorbigyear.blogspot.com.

What the longspur?

Today I went over to woods lake and found around 400 canada geese and 200 cackling geese. Near the side of the lake I could see a northern pintail and a coot. After that I headed and down to Timnath reservoir to take a look at the horned lark and the western Meadowlark. I got more than I bargained for as I found a Lapland longspur, a rarity for this time of year. Today was a pretty good day.

2 new birds

Today I decided to go up to watson lake to see if I could get lucky and find the famous pygmy owl. No luck but I did happen to find a hairy woodpecker making a loud racket in a tree next to me. While walking back to the car, I looked up at the canyon and saw a hawk. I put my binoculars in view of it and saw that it was a Swainson's hawk, the first one of the year for me.

4 new birds

Hello fellow bird watchers. Those of you who follow skyler bol's blog might think that this title is familiar, and it is but I wasn't feeling really creative. For this birding trip I did, I went around Timnath reservoir where I found a white-winged dove perched on a post. As I was heading back home, a bird flew over the car. I immediately said KESTREL but then took a further look at the bird through my binoculars. Well what do you know, it was a prairie falcon. So far I had already found 2 new birds for my big year. I then headed over to fossil creek reservoir so that I could hear the calls of a western Meadowlark in the grass. As I was walking the trail I looked up into a tree and used my binoculars to get a better visual of what I thought was a red-tailed hawk, but no, not this time, this was a rough-legged hawk. But what was that one bird behind it!? I asked a fellow bird watcher if I could borrow his spotting scope. I focused in on the bird, and son of a Nutcracker. I found a short-eared owl staring dead centered at me. 4 new birds and a big year list coming close to about 90. This was a spectacular day! A day of luck

Hi fellow birders. Today I was birding with friend Skyler Bol and his dad Tom Bol. Our first destination was at Grandview cemetery to look for a yellow-bellied sapsucker. After cruising around the cemetery we finally heard this loud knock knock knock knock knock. Me and Skyler quickly jumped out of the car to go after it. We went all the way across the street until we zeroed in on the tree. Then all of a sudden, it flew off. After coming back to the same tree later we heard it again only to clarify it as a downy woodpecker.

After that we headed over to Timnath reservoir to see if we could find a pheasant or rough-legged hawk. We had no luck but we were able to get a Western Meadowlark and 3 horned lark.
Total list:

Later we were heading behind the Walmart on harmony to see what they had at the pond. OMG! We had found a snow goose. I was glad I could get it on my list. We were then driving on our way to the environmental learning center to find a wood duck when you we found a great-honed owl and a pintail. At the environmental learning center we were so lucky to have found a male wood duck. All inall today was totally worth it.
